MRI Update

Adam and Morgan were down at St. Jude the end of last week for yet another MRI and Morgan's tumor remains stable!! This was her first MRI since coming off her chemo (study drug) in October so we couldn't be happier! All her blood counts came way up too since stopping the drug which means she can come off her very last pill that she was taking. She is officially drug free! She's fighting this tumor with everything she's got and we are just so proud of her!  She is a walking miracle, we have so very much to be thankful for this holiday season!  We'll head back down the beginning of February.

Morgan is officially on the Chili's Menu!

Morgan is officially on the menu at Chili's Nationwide! Although, each Chili's restaurant menu selection will depend if they finished up their last batch but I'm thinking most Chili's should have the one with Morgan by now. For all of us North Forkers, I do know that the Chili's right off exit 62 on the LIE has them in!

St. Jude Give Thanks Walk 2013

Just wanted to say THANKS to everyone that supported our Helping Hands 4 Morgan Team and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital this weekend!!  With all your generous donations, we were awarded the Top Fundraising Team plaque for the 2nd year in a row!  We also won best t-shirt design!  :)  We don't have exact numbers (they are still tallying last minute donations handed in at the walk) but I believe all of Long Island raised around $100,000 and our Helping Hands 4 Morgan Team raised over $15,000 (if my calculations are correct)!!  We will keep you posted.  We are so thankful for all our family, friends, and community that supported our team, we couldn't have done this without you!!!  I have a little album on our Helping Hands 4 Morgan Facebook site or click to your right on our St. Jude Give Thanks Walk 2013 album.

Thanks again and we hope you all have an incredible Thanksgiving!  What a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season by giving back to such a phenomenal Hospital, we have so much to be thankful for!!

Love,
Nikki, Adam, Hunter and Morgan

Adam and I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to Sarah Sirico and everyone at Fitness Advantage for hosting this amazing and fun event for St. Jude!  Also, just wanted to acknowledge and THANK this awesome community that we live in, the support we have been receiving over the last 2 years is so very much appreciated and words can't describe how unbelievable happy we are to have such wonderful people in our lives.  You raised over $3000 on Saturday for an extraordinary hospital!!!  Once this money is put toward our St. Jude Give Thanks Walk Helping Hands 4 Morgan Team, we will have raised a total of over $9000!!!  We will be less than $1000 away from our $10,000 goal and (hopefully) secure our spot as the #1 fundraising team on Long Island!  Being able to give back to a Hospital that has given us so much love, support, and care means the world to us and we can't thank you ALL enough!  We are so very proud of our team, all the generous donors, and everyone that has helped us along the way!

Updates

Happy Halloween!
Doc McStuffins, Ariel, and The Chicken Man!

Our Helping Hands 4 Morgan team has had some pretty generous donations over the last few weeks and we have, so far, raised $5995!!!  THANK YOU!!  We raised $6635 last year, we are confident that we can beat our own record and we are really hoping to be the #1 fundraising team on Long Island again!  The team in 1st place now has raised over $7900, there is still time, we can do this!  My dream of being #1 in all of NY was cut short by Eric Trump and Elvis Duran when they formed the Elvis Trumps Cancer team.  There is no competing with a Trump but that is ok because they have raised over $32,000 and our ultimate goal is to raise as much money as we can for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital!!  :)

The walk is Saturday, November 23rd, there is still time to donate and/or register to walk with us.  If you can't attend the walk, Sarah Sirico, at Fitness Advantage is hosting a Tag Team Fitness Challenge this Saturday, November 9th at 10am with an auction (some pretty incredible items donated!!) to follow!  Adam and I are participating too so, if you would just like a good laugh, please stop by!

Adam and I were asked to speak at a fundraising event for St. Jude last Friday night in NJ, hosted by a committee called St. Jude Angels for Hope.  What an incredible evening, filled with such unbelievably kind and generous people, it was truly inspiring!!  When we left, they were $10,000 short of raising 1 MILLION  Dollars!!!  THANK YOU Angels for Hope and all the guests that attended, it was truly an honor to be a part of such a beautiful night!

Getting ready for the St. Jude Angels for Hope event.

MRI Update

We were at St. Jude this past Monday for scans and they came back STABLE!!  We also met with Morgan's neuro-oncologist to discuss the end of her 2 year clinical drug that she has been on.  With the very strong recommendation to take her off the study drug, October 6th will be her last day on the meds.  Long story short, at this point in time, her doctor strongly feels that the drug will be doing more harm than good to her tiny little body.  From what we were told, it is typical that any pediatric cancer patient come off their chemo after 18mths to 2yrs.  Because it is a clinical drug we don't even know all the side effects from being on it but they do know that it can have damaging effects on your liver and blood cells and could even cause Morgan to develop leukemia if kept on too long.  Besides the harsh side effects, her Doctor also just doesn't believe that this phase 1 study drug is even doing anything.  No other DIPG patient to go through that Hospital on this drug has survived so they believe that somehow because Morgan has been atypical from the start that she is somehow different.  It is a mystery to everyone!  This was, by far, the hardest decision we have ever made in our entire lives but we 100% trust her Doctor and know that everyone at that Hospital has Morgan's best interest at heart and care for her very much.  Our safety net is gone and we can only hope that Morgan continues to defy the odds on her own.  If the tumor should start to grow they will put her on an entirely different drug, once you are taken off the study drug you cannot go back on.  We will continue to visit St. Jude every 8 weeks for MRI's and keep a very close eye on her!  On the positive side, she will eventually be off ALL her meds and, if all goes well, we can even get her port out, which will mean less needles and less anxiety for her.  We will celebrate the end of her chemo with a trip to Disney in November!  We have learned that life can be short and we must live life to the fullest because at this point in our lives, what the hell are we waiting for!?  Sticking with that moto we are thrilled to announce that Morgan is going to become and Hunter is once again going to be a big sister in April!!

A big thanks to everyone that was able to eat at Chili's on the 23rd and don't forget to check out our St. Jude Give Thanks Walk Helping Hands 4 Morgan Team page!!  So far we have raised $1125, please help us reach our $10,000 goal!  Last year we only put a goal of $2500 and raised almost $7000 so this year we set our goal high and I know we can do it!

First Day of School!!

1st day of UPK!

Walking Hunter out to the bus for her 1st day of 2nd grade

On September 16th, 2 years ago, Doctors told us that Morgan had 18 months to 2 years max to live.  We never anticipated being able to watch her go to school for the first time but she has defied the odds and not only is she still with us but she is going strong!  It was a morning full of both happiness and tears (on my part, not Morgan!)!

Stable Scans & Sibling Star Day = One Happy Family!!

Morgan's artwork was framed and hung up in the sedation area of St. Jude!  In case you couldn't make it out, Morgan's masterpiece is a picture of her and I, along with our hand prints! :)

Sibling Star Day!!

Western theme

It has certainly been tough for Hunter to deal with everything that has been going on but she is doing a great job and we are so very proud of her!!!  She had so much fun at Siblings Star Day and she deserved every bit of it!!

STABLE!!!!  Morgan's health at this point in her diagnosis is nothing short of a miracle!!  I think all of your prayers and thoughts are being heard because Morgan is among less than 10% of kids with DIPG to be doing this well at this stage and we are just so very thankful!  We have, for some reason, been given this gift of time, however long that may be, and we are enjoying every minute we have with her!  At this point, no one knows how much extra time she has, it may only mean months but it could also be years, there is no way to know.  They tell us that we should try to live life more "normal" but, we kinda forgot, what is "normal"?  We really can't seem to remember life before Morgan's diagnosis.  The words cancer and brain tumor are used so often in our house that Hunter and Morgan pretend their baby dolls have brain tumors and they take them to St. Jude to get treatment.  That is just so not "normal" but, then again, it's "normal" for us; one of those parenting moments where you don't know whether to laugh or cry.  Morgan has 3 more rounds of her clinical drug and she will officially be at the 2 year mark where, technically, the study ends and she is supposed to stop taking the drug.  There is something called "compassionate use" where they will possibly let her continue to take the drug but the question remains...is it doing anything??  Every other child that we have met at St. Jude with DIPG that was on the same drug has since passed?  Is the drug somehow working on Morgan or is it that Morgan has just been so atypical from the beginning?  We have a lot to think about before our next visit in September!

As you can see, Hunter participated in St. Jude's annual Siblings Star Day and had a blast!  Siblings Day is a day to honor all the siblings of St. Jude patients by letting them know just how truly special they are.  The child life specialists did a great job!!

St. Jude Give Thanks. Walk.

Some of our Helping Hands 4 Morgan team members from last year!

Saturday
November 23, 2013

Bethpage Ballpark
Central Islip, NY

Our Helping Hands 4 Morgan team is once again participating in the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk on Saturday, November 23, 2013!  Last year, we were the #1 fundraising team on Long Island, this year we want to be #1 in NY!!  We are reaching out to family, near and far; friends, new and old; and our wonderful North Fork Community to help us reach our goal and to help St. Jude and help other kids just like Morgan.  If you are unable to donate, we would love to have some new team members this year to help us fundraise or if you would like to help out by simply spreading the word about the walk through social media or even hang up a flier in your office/workplace, we would so greatly appreciate it!  Hunter and Morgan are actual fundraising participants this year!

It is truly difficult for us to put into words just how much we LOVE St. Jude and to describe how truly spectacular they are.  Words just don’t do it justice.  It is, without a doubt, one of those places where to see it, is to believe it but we have tried our best to express how awesome they are and to share a little glimpse of our journey so far.  I apologize in advance for the length of this entry but we hope you know how much we appreciate you taking the time to read it!

In the early part of September 2011, at the age of 2 ½, Adam and I noticed Morgan’s right eye occasionally turning inward.  At the very worst, we worried that she would need glasses; then on September 16, 2011 we were given the devastating news that our daughter had a brain tumor.  One day later, we were given even more earth shattering news.  Morgan had a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) and, because of its location in the brainstem, it was not only inoperable, but terminal.  There is no cure for DIPG; the average life expectancy of a child with DIPG is only 11 months after diagnosis.  We were told that we would have no more than 2 years max with her.

With the help of Peconic Pediatrics we quickly began researching our options; St. Jude kept rising to the foreground.  Once a place only seen to us on TV; St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would soon become a beacon of hope.  The hardest part was being away from our, then, nearly 5 year old daughter Hunter who had only just started Kindergarten at the time.  We made the difficult decision to have Adam stay home with Hunter while Morgan and I stayed at St. Jude for 7 weeks.

We, naturally, had reservations about making the right choice; we were scared to be so far away from home, from everything and everybody we knew and loved, but after the first day there, we never revisited that thought again.  The Doctors and Nurses that take care of Morgan are PHENOMENAL! She is not just a patient to them, but a little girl that they truly care about.  It is a hospital that treats catastrophic illnesses, a hospital that could be filled with sadness and fear, but it is not; St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a hospital full of incredible people and inspirational families that make you want to smile and fight rather than lay down and cry but most of all, it is a hospital full of HOPE.  By the end of the 7 weeks, we were scared to go home, we were scared to leave the comfort of St. Jude and everyone there we grew so very attached to.

Everyone we interact with at that Hospital is so kind and I mean EVERYONE!  What makes St. Jude so unique, what makes them stand out from the rest is not just the extraordinary medical care but the little things that go on at the Hospital on a daily basis.  It’s the head maintenance man in the Grizzly House who always stops to say hello and see how we are doing.  It’s the workers in the Kay Kafe who know Morgan by name and always try to talk to her, even though she won’t say two words to them.  It’s the child life specialist that always makes time to have a special appointment for our older daughter Hunter when she visits.  It’s the Doctors and Nurses you pass in the hallways who will actually stop to give you a hug and say hello.   It’s the friendships we have with other families and the unspoken respect we have for one another, it’s that common bond that nobody else will ever understand.  We have come to appreciate every person there.  We’ve been in and out of hospitals through the years and we’ve never experienced the kindness and care that we get at St. Jude.  St. Jude is truly a special place like no other.

Morgan received 6 weeks of radiation along with an oral clinical drug that she continues to take every day.  We visit St. Jude every 8 weeks for an MRI and regular check-up.  Miraculously, it will be 2 years in September and Morgan’s tumor remains stable!  She is among an extremely small percentage of children to be doing so well at this stage of her diagnosis.  She is full of life and love and her strength and unrelenting spirit keeps us going every day.  She is anxiously awaiting preschool this September, a day we never thought we would ever get to see.  With the help of St. Jude, we hope she continues to defy the odds!

Here are just a few more reasons to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital:

1.      The daily operating cost for St. Jude is $1.8 million, which is primarily covered by public contributions.

2.      During the past five years, 81 cents of every dollar received has supported the research and treatment at St. Jude.

3.      St. Jude pays ALL medical expenses not covered by insurance; families at St. Jude will NEVER receive any sort of bill from them!  We recently had to switch health insurance plans and our new plan does not pay for anything out of state or out of network, meaning, we would have had to sell everything we owned to have Morgan treated there!!  Morgan is under the best care in the world thanks to St. Jude and thanks to contributions from supporters like you and we are so very thankful!!!

4.      Research findings at St. Jude are shared freely with doctors and scientists all over the world.  You are not only helping kids at St. Jude but you are helping kids everywhere!!

5.      In 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer, was 4 percent. Today, the survival rate for this once deadly disease is 94 percent, thanks to research and treatment protocols developed at St. Jude.

6.      St. Jude has developed protocols that have helped push overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to 80 percent today.

7.      Parents magazine named St. Jude as one of the top children's cancer care hospitals in the U.S. for two consecutive surveys.

Thank you for all your continued support!!  Please visit our official St. Jude HelpingHands 4 Morgan team website where you can find more information about the walk, become a member of our team, or make a contribution to our team or one of our team members.
THANK YOU!!!!
All our love,
Nikki, Adam, Hunter, and Morgan

Kids for Kids Foundation - A Day at the Bronx Zoo

The kids told the face painter if they wanted something nice or scary and then the face painter surprised them with an animal.  Hunter surprisingly chose scary and because of her missing teeth looking like fangs, she got a snake!  Morgan, of course, chose nice and got some cute little penguins!

Daddy's little girl!

Kids for Kids, successfully raises funds and spreads awareness for the Children of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  On Saturday, June 1, New York City professionals united with their families for a one-of-a-kind event to raise awareness and support for the children and families of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We were told about 1100 guests gathered at the Bronx Zoo for a day of fun, which included full-day admission to the zoo, face painting, raffle prizes, character visits, tours and more!  It was disgustingly hot but we still had a GREAT time.  We were also honored to be asked to say a few words about Morgan and St. Jude.  This incredible organization raised $751,932!!  It was simply amazing and truly inspiring, we were so happy to be apart of this special day!  It costs 1.8 MILLION dollars a day to run St. Jude and it is because of supporters like this that the hospital is able to help so many families like our own!

THANK YOU Kids for Kids!!!

St. Jude Visit

Our tough little peanut!
Our toothless princess!

Happy belated Mother's Day!!   Being a Mom has brought me the greatest joy in my life and I would like to thank my wonderful husband for giving me the 2 best Mother's Day gifts ever, Hunter and Morgan!!

I did get some other pretty great Mother's Day gifts this year as well...Morgan's port decided that it would work again and her MRI came back stable!!!!!  Our next visit is in July.  They will be having their annual "Siblings Day" (we have never been), a day full of fun for all siblings of patients to let them know how special they are.  Hunter has been an absolute trooper through all of this but we know how hard it is for her to have us coming and going all the time and watching Morgan get so much attention so we are beyond excited for her to have a special day just for her so she knows just how incredible she is too!

As you can see, Morgan had a rough week...2 days before leaving for St. Jude Morgan took a bad fall down our stairs and broke her collar bone!  I was right behind her on the stairs and just helplessly watched our little peanut tumble down 5 or 6 stairs, it was awful!  We took her to the ER and they actually told us that nothing was broken, 24hrs later she was still in a lot of pain, extremely protective, and just not wanting to do much of anything.  We even called to have her x-rays looked at again and they still insisted that nothing was broken.  Very long story short, St. Jude once again came to the rescue and confirmed that not only was it broke but it had become displaced!  Unfortunately, nothing can be done for broken collar bones besides wearing a sling and waiting about 8 weeks for it to completely heal.  Morgan has quickly adjusted to life with one arm and continues to amaze us every day with her strength and spirit, she's just incredible!

Just wanted to thank Peconic Pediatrics for all their help too, you guys are truly awesome!

Meanwhile, while we were gone, Hunter lost both her top 2 front teeth!  She is losing her baby teeth all out of order and had previously lost her top 2 lateral incisors so now she has 4 teeth missing up top and looks hysterical!

Facebook

I finally joined the bandwagon and signed up for facebook.  By doing so, Sarah was then able to give me access to the Helping Hands 4 Morgan facebook account which I can now help her out with.  I probably won't be doing much with my own personal page, I mainly just wanted to be able to keep more up to date with everyone on the HH4M site and the St. Jude Facebook page.  I will definitely keep using my blog as my main source of updates but at least now when I post something on my blog I can directly update the facebook page as well with a link (I think/hope?).  I am learning as I go so please forgive me if I mess anything up!

We also found out that over $280,000 was raised for St. Jude at the fundraiser we attended last week!!  You can visit their St. Jude NY & NJ Facebook page to view photos from the event: http://on.fb.me/YwEmER

Gold Coast Cares for St. Jude Fundraiser

Morgan and Christian
Christian is a patient at St. Jude with an Anaplastic Ependymoma (a type of brain tumor)

Our 2 beautiful princesses!
What a GREAT event!!  We had such a wonderful time, Oheka Castle was gorgeous!  We met another St. Jude family that couldn't have been nicer and as you can see Morgan made a new little friend.  As always, the whole staff at ALSAC was awesome and went out of their way to make us feel so comfortable.  They had some pretty spectacular donations made for both a silent and live auction as well.  This was actually the first time they held this particular fundraiser but I believe they are looking to make it an annual event.  Thanks to some very generous donors, it was a very successful evening and it was pretty spectacular to be a part of it!

A big thanks to everyone at ALSAC for all the wonderful work you do for St. Jude!!!!!!!!

St. Jude had a professional photographer so I'll post some more pics of the event as soon as I can.

MRI Results

Morgan's tumor remains stable, we are always so very grateful for such wonderful news!!  However, what should have been a quick and non eventful visit turned into one of our longer days at St. Jude.  Morgan's port decided it didn't want to work anymore so we had a day full of needle sticks and lots of nurses trying their hardest to get it working again.  A port is an implantable central line surgically placed in Morgan's chest which allows her to receive drugs or other fluids directly into the bloodstream through a large vein and is also used to take blood samples every 4 weeks.  When we first arrived at St. Jude and Morgan had her port placed we were told that most the kids there referred to their port as their "Buddy" but Morgan expressed her disapproval of this nickname immediately so the nurse told her she had to come up with a name of her own.  One night we were walking back to our room from the Hospital and we were looking up at the moon and the stars and she decided she wanted to call her port "Star".  You can watch her helping one of the nurses give "Star" a "drink" in an old video on the bottom left.  Anyway, we are awaiting to hear our options but unless it starts to miraculously work on it's own, she will require a minor surgical procedure to fix the situation on our next visit.  The needle sticks have always been Morgan's main source of anxiety and now she is absolutely terrified, it just breaks our hearts to watch.  Don't get me wrong, at this point in time, things could definitely be a whole lot worse, and we are so very thankful for the scans coming back stable!!!

On a brighter note, I now must share my celebrity sighting with you all!  We had an early morning flight home from Memphis Sunday morning.  Morgan and I were standing in an empty airport waiting for Adam so we could go through security.  We were both staring off into space, tired from our trip, when I look over at Morgan and to my complete shock see Trace Adkins staring down at her.  He continued on and walked right in front of me and I smiled and said hello and even got one in return!  I guess I should share why we like him so much and I'll try to keep it as short as possible.  Adam and I have always liked Trace Adkins, but we liked him even more, after watching him on Celebrity Apprentice a few years back.  He just seemed so genuinely nice and we were really disappointed when he didn't win the whole thing!  Then, in the spring of 2011, because we liked Trace Adkins so much, we decided to watch the new season of Celebrity Apprentice when John Rich happened to be playing for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  Like Trace Adkins, we just immediately liked John Rich as well.  At the time, we knew nothing more about St. Jude than what we had seen on TV.  Every time they showed clips of John Rich and the families at St. Jude I would cry and wonder how any family could ever deal with their child having cancer.  John Rich ended up winning that season and raised a great deal of money for the Hospital.  About 4 months later Morgan was diagnosed with DIPG and we became one of those families that we had watched on TV.  We have come to learn that a great deal of the country music community are BIG supporters of St. Jude and that is why both Trace Adkins and John Rich will forever be ingrained in my memory and why we not only like their music, but all the charitable work they do and why it had more meaning to see Trace Adkins in person.

Sorry for the lengthy entry!!!  The fundraiser for St. Jude is April 6th so we will be sure to let you know how it goes!  Thanks for all the nice thoughts on the facebook site!

HAPPY EASTER!!!!

Gold Coast Cares for St. Jude

Back in November when the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk was cancelled, due to Hurricane Sandy, we attended an open house at St. Jude's ALSAC NYC office.

"ALSAC is the fundraising organization of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  ALSAC exists solely to raise the funds necessary to operate and maintain St. Jude. The daily operating cost for St. Jude is $1.8 million, which is primarily covered by public contributions.  During the past five years, 81 cents of every dollar received has supported the research and treatment at St. Jude."

We met some wonderful people at the NYC office!  They have since invited us, as guests, to attend the Gold Coast Cares for St. Jude fundraising event on April 6th at Oheka Castle.  We were so honored to be asked and we are just so excited to go and help further support St. Jude!  We will be bringing Morgan (and Hunter too, of course!) along so that everyone there can see what wonderful care St. Jude is able to provide with all the generous donations they receive, not only at this event, but throughout the year.  We are one of two St. Jude families attending.  I was told that they would be doing a little write up on Morgan and would also like to mention our Helping Hands 4 Morgan team from the walk!  Which, by the way, we've had many people express interest in joining the team and/or donating for this years Give Thanks Walk in November 2013 so we will keep you all posted on the info as soon as we know anything.  The walk will definitely be an annual event for us!

Thanks for all the wonderful Birthday wishes for Morgan that were left on Sarah's facebook page!  Adam and I are probably some of the last people on this planet not to have facebook accounts so sometimes we forget to check the site and Sarah kindly reminds us every once in awhile to take a look.  In the future, if you would like, you could always leave a message directly on this blog.  We love hearing from you all, it always lifts our spirits knowing how much support our entire family has had from everyone!!

Last, but certainly not least, we wanted to take a minute to say a big THANK YOU to Peconic Pediatrics!!!  I'm always writing how much we love St. Jude but we also love you guys too, we would not be at St. Jude if it wasn't for you and Morgan surely would not have been diagnosed so early without your excellent care and speedy actions, reactions, and responses to everything that followed!  EVERYONE there takes such wonderful care of both Morgan and Hunter and is ALWAYS so friendly and helpful with whatever we need.  You guys are the best of the best and we just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate everything you do!

Morgan has an MRI scheduled for March 22nd.  We will update on her results as soon as we can and will be sure write a post after the fundraiser as well!

Hope you all have a Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy New Year!

Morgan, Grandma, & Grandpa

Danny Thomas
Morgan's favorite place to take photos!

2013 is off to a great start with Morgan's MRI results coming back stable!!  It has been 16 months since Morgan's diagnosis and she continues to exceed everyone's expectations.  She is among an extremely small percentage of children to be doing so well at this stage.  We are so very grateful for this time we have been given, in fact, Morgan's 4th Birthday is coming up soon and we will have lots to celebrate!!

As you can see, we took Hunter and Grandma and Grandpa West to St. Jude this past visit too.  It was Grandpa's 1st time seeing the Hospital and Grandma's 1st time back since our initial 7 week stay in the fall of 2011.  We showed Grandpa all around the Hospital, introduced him to all the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Jude, took him out to eat some Tennessee BBQ (Adam's favorite!), and even visited the Memphis Zoo (Morgan's favorite!).

We were very proud to show off all of St. Jude to Grandpa and despite the circumstances of our visit and with the help of some uplifting news we had a great time!
